England FC at the Euros: a metaphor for Popper’s Open Society

Popper wrote how Plato’s dialectic had corrupted democracy through the belief in a golden age to come, or a golden age past. This essay will look at how the recent journey of the English football team can be read as a rejection of historical parallels and so an espousal of Popper’s argument: ideologically driven movements are eventually destined to fail but not before the ruination of many lives; we can (and should only) try to change our lives and society in small ways.
